True or false - an EMP attack could kill 90% of Americans… a civilization-killing event… total collapse of the economy?

Here are the facts and the fiction behind an

EMP Attack

We live in the 21st century, where truth is an endangered species, as a recent article pointed out:

Nowhere in the Western world is truth respected. Integrity today in the Western world has no value. You cannot find integrity in the government, in the global corporations, in the universities and schools, and most certainly not in the media.(

Getting to the truth behind an EMP (electromagnetic pulse) attack on the USA is a case in point. In the following article, we see “ former senior national security officials of the Reagan and Clinton administrations” giving a serious warning to the American people, but is it true?

How North Korea Could Kill 90 Percent Of Americans

“In February and March of 2015, former senior national security officials of the Reagan and Clinton administrations warned that North Korea should be regarded as capable of delivering by satellite a small nuclear warhead, specially designed to make a high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack against the United States.

According to the Congressional EMP Commission, a single warhead delivered by North Korean satellite could blackout the national electric grid and other life-sustaining critical infrastructures for over a year — killing 9 of 10 Americans by starvation and social collapse. Two North Korean satellites, the KMS-3 and KMS-4, presently orbit over the US on trajectories consistent with surprise EMP attack.” (

A North Korean Nuclear EMP Attack? …UNLIKELY

“Considering the physics behind EMP and the status of North Korea’s nuclear program to date, doomsday headlines in the press regarding the North’s potential EMP threat are grossly overstated. North Korea’s nuclear tests have not yet demonstrated sufficient yield to cause damage to large areas through EMP.

In the early 1950s, above ground nuclear tests of a size similar to what the North Koreans have demonstrated were conducted at the Nevada Test Site just 65 miles from Las Vegas. There were no reports of power outages. The casinos continued to operate. Nuclear fallout was the bigger issue.” (

Fact or Fiction?North Korea Could Kill 90 Percent Of The American People” Was Directly Pulled From A Science Fiction Novel

“The claim that North Korea could kill 90 percent of the American people was directly pulled from a science fiction novel. Furthermore, North Korea does not have thermonuclear weapons. It claims to have tested a thermonuclear device last year but the device was not large enough to actually have been so.

Warning against the threat of North Korean nuclear weapons is a public service.

Warning that North Korea could kill 90 percent of the American people with EMP is not.

It’s even a good idea to warn, broadly, against the threat of EMP: in 1859, a solar storm sent a pulse of energy hurtling toward Earth, sending electrical surges through those electrical systems in use at the time, telegraph networks.

Tying such a real problem to a fantasy involving North Korea does a disservice to the larger issue.(

So What Is A Nuclear Electromagnetic Pulse?

“Nuclear electromagnetic pulse (EMP), a time-varying electromagnetic radiation resulting from a nuclear explosion. For a high-yield explosion of approximately 10 megatons detonated 320 km (200 miles) above the centre of the continental United States, almost the entire country, as well as parts of Mexico and Canada, would be affected by EMP — destroying practically all electronic devices and electrical transformers. Procedures to improve the ability of networks, especially military command and control systems, to withstand EMP are known as ‘hardening’.” (

The First Time The US Tested An EMP Weapon

“On July 9, 1962, a Thor missile lifted its payload into space. The 1.4 megaton warhead detonated about 240 miles above the Pacific Ocean…

‘Most fortunately, these tests took place over Johnston Island in the mid-Pacific rather than the Nevada Test Site, or the electromagnetic pulse would still be indelibly imprinted in the minds of the citizenry of the western US, as well as in the history books,’ Lowell Wood, a physicist and expert on EMP at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, told Congress in 2004. ‘As it was, significant damage was done to both civilian and military electrical systems throughout the Hawaiian Islands, over 800 miles away from ground zero.’

In Hawaii, the effects were almost immediate: streetlights blew out, circuit breakers tripped, telephone service crashed, aircraft radios malfunctioned, burglar alarms sounded, and garage door openers mysteriously activated.

As the flash from the nuclear explosion dimmed, an aurora formed in the sky that could be seen for thousands of miles. One reporter in Hawaii wrote, ‘For three minutes after the blast, the moon was centered in a sky partly blood-red and partly pink. Clouds appeared as dark silhouettes against the lighted sky.’

The high-energy radiation not only created a massive light show; it temporarily altered the shape of the Van Allen Belt – part of the magnetosphere surrounding the Earth that actually protects the planet from solar storms that could destroy life on the world’s surface.

As the weeks and months went by, however, there were other casualties from the Starfish Prime blast. At least six satellites – including Telstar, the world’s first telecommunications satellite – were either damaged or destroyed by passing through the lingering radiation belt left by the detonation. Scientists and the military were stunned by the results of Starfish Prime. They knew about EMP, but the effects of the blast far exceeded their expectations.

Despite the very public detonation of the weapon, the cause of the power failures and satellite malfunctions remained secret for years, as did a new discussion that began: how a single nuclear weapon might be used to cripple a nation in one blow.(

The Result Of An EMP Event

“An electromagnetic pulse can range from a minor inconvenience to a civilization-killing event. It just depends on how powerful it is. But in the worst case scenario, we could be facing a situation where our electrical grids have been fried, there is no heat for our homes, our computers don’t work, the Internet does not work, our cell phones do not work, there are no more banking records, nobody can use credit cards anymore, hospitals are unable to function, nobody can pump gas, and supermarkets cannot operate because there is no power and no refrigeration. Basically, we would witness the complete and total collapse of the economy.” (

The Warning Went Out

Writing to Co-workers in April 1982, Mr Armstrong warned:

“No corner of the globe will be safe from the specter of cataclysmic destruction! Even more disturbing is the growing prospect of Nuclear Terrorism – nuclear Mass Murder by madmen bent on their own insane goals! Many authorities believe that when the next nuclear bomb is used, it will be by terrorists and not by a national government.

The destructive capacity of nuclear bombs in terrorists’ hands is a growing risk… In addition to terrorist groups, experts fear that unstable regimes in various countries could also get the bomb. An unbalanced Third World dictator with a nuclear device could kill millions of people. A new Stalin or Hitler in a major nation would have the stockpiles to literally obliterate the entire human race!

The nuclear ‘genie’ is out of the bottle! Events are even now impelling the world toward a time of cataclysmic destruction. It is time to awake to the imminence of nuclear war and nuclear terrorism!” ( Co-Worker Letter – April 21, 1982)

EMP - A Near Perfect Weapon For A Terrorist

“Here’s an interesting question. If you are a terrorist organization and could only lay your hands on one nuclear weapon. Would you want to blow up one city or detonate it high enough to wipe out the electrical systems for thousands of cities?

Any device not shielded against a large EMP attack is likely to be damaged or destroyed.

We’re talking damage to the following:

  • Power Grids
  • Laptops
  • iPad
  • iPod
  • Smart Phones
  • Cell Phone Towers
  • Telephones
  • Desktop Computers
  • Mainframe Computers
  • Routers
  • Automobile Engine Management Computers
  • Jet Aircraft Systems
  • Air Traffic Control Systems
  • Banking Systems
  • Hospital Diagnostic Machines
  • Televisions
  • Internet Servers
  • Refrigerators
  • Thermostats
  • Plus Anything Else With A Micro Chip”

The Threat IS Real!

IF America were to be attacked with an EMP device, then the result could be the “blackout [of] the national electric grid and other life-sustaining critical infrastructures for over a year — killing 9 of 10 Americans by starvation and social collapse.” The situation is that serious!

However, there is another source for an EMP “attack”, and it could be even more devastating than a nuclear blast.

Space weather WARNING:

Huge solar storm could spark dangerous electricity surge

“A huge space storm is long overdue which could wreak havoc on technology on Earth, researchers have warned. In September 1859, the sun unleashed a series of powerful solar flares that were so powerful telegraph operators’ offices experienced a surge in electricity which resulted in some buildings setting on fire.

The solar storm, which is known as the Carrington Event, which hit 160 years ago was so powerful that its southern auroras could be seen as far north as Queensland in Australia and northern auroras were seen as far south as Cuba.

Researchers now believe the event was not a one-off and the sun could be set to release a storm just as powerful.” (

What Happened In 1859?

“In 1859, a powerful solar storm burned telegraph wires all across Europe and America and electrified the skies. As the sun awakens from a period of dormancy, it’s worth remembering that a storm of that magnitude today could bring modernity to a sudden halt.

The Great Solar Storm of 1859 is now known in history as ‘the Carrington flare’ that burned telegraph wires all across Europe and America, lighting the skies in many parts to the extent that miners awoke to start their day with breakfast in the middle of night. It was the largest single solar eruption from a sunspot in recorded solar observation history, described in Stuart Clark’s book, The Sun Kings.

Within twenty-four hours, the Aurora Borealis electrified the skies glowing in red, green, and purple colors - so bright that newspaper print [could be read] as if it were daylight in numerous locations throughout North America and as far south as Cuba - that normally keep to the cold Arctic Polar Regions. The lights resulted from the electromagnetic energy fields created by the solar wind plasma colliding with the Earth’s upper magnetosphere on a significant larger planetary scale, as told in Clark’s 189-page book published in 2007.

The 1859 solar event was disconcerting as telegraph systems worldwide went haywire for several hours. Spark discharges shocked telegraph operators and set the telegraph paper on fire. Even when the telegraphers disconnected the batteries powering the lines, aurora-induced electric currents in the wires still allowed messages to transmit. Even simple magnetic compasses ceased to point north for hours.” (

It Could Happen Today…

“On September 2, 1859, an incredible storm of charged particles sent by the sun slammed into Earth’s atmosphere, overpowered it, and caused havoc on the ground …the planet’s defenses were totally overwhelmed. Over the past decade, similar but less powerful storms have likewise busted through, giving scientists insight into what will eventually happen again.

The outlook is not rosy. The solar storm of 1859 was three times more powerful than one that cut power to an entire Canadian province in 1989. Experts say if it happened today – and it could – the result might be unthinkable.” (

Recent Massive Solar Flares

“Two recent solar storms have caused local disruptions to the power grid: the Great Aurora of 1989 and The Halloween Storm of 2003.

On March 9, 1989, Kitt Peak Observatory spotted a major solar flare. On March 13, reddish auroras like those in the Carrington Flare reached as far south as Florida and Cuba, and shorted out Quebec’s power grid. Circuits also overloaded in Great Britain, New York and Virginia. A critical transformer melted in New Jersey. Only by buying electricity from other states did New Jersey operators save the East Coast from suffering a blackout like Quebec’s. Even the Space Shuttle was impacted. The Discovery, then in orbit, showed bizarre instrument readings, and the mission was nearly aborted.

In November 2003, an ‘X’ solar flare, the strongest of solar storms, temporarily disabled many satellites, killed one satellite completely and burned out an instrument on a Mars orbiter. The crew of the International Space Station took shelter, reporting elevated radiation readings and ‘shooting stars’ in their own eyes.

In September 2005, a string of ‘X’ solar flares caused lesser disruptions to major power grids and knocked out the GPS system completely for ten minutes.

Last but not least, a June 7, 2011 moderate solar flare caused minor satellite disruption - and I may have heard it on my phone on June 9; there was an unusual amount of static over the line for two days!” (

Could An Electromagnetic Pulse Send Us Back To The Dark Ages?

“The electromagnetic pulse. It’s the big, bad boogeyman of the electronic age where we depend on a constant stream of communication and connection. Everything stops – instantly. EMPs are often used in pop culture (particularly any time Magneto wants to take over the planet) to caused widespread destruction and to control a population by plunging them into a new Dark Age. What’s the likelihood of such an event happening? Would an EMP do any damage at all? Let’s take a look.

Size of blast

In testimony to the House National Security Committee in 1997, Gary Smith, the director of Applied Physics Lab at Johns Hopkins University, spoke on the radius of devastation that would occur from a high altitude EMP. The testimony stated that a detonation at 300 miles above the surface of the Earth would result in an E1 pulse that would cover an area the size of the United States along with most of Canada and Mexico.

In 2010, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory commissioned a 168 page document that would anticipate the events of an E1 pulse, The Early-Time (E1) High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) and Its Impact on the US Power Grid. In addition to pointing out weakness after weakness in infrastructure and connectivity of the US power grid. These weakness included the purveyance of unmanned substations and poorly sheltered (if sheltered at all) control cables, which would serve to further carry the negative effects of an EMP. The document has the following ominous statement: ‘ A major concern is simply that we have not really experienced such an event yet (an E1 HEMP attack), and there is not a good way to simulate such an attack on a widely distributed network.

Verdict: We’ll be camping for a while.

This is a tough one, as even our government admits they don’t really know what would happen and they think we are woefully unprepared.

Civilization may not be sent to the Dark Ages, but there would almost certainly be significant, wide scale disruptions in power and communications until our power infrastructure could be restored. I would argue that we would certainly be living in a mid-1800s world for several days, if not weeks, with little knowledge of what was going on in the rest of the country and world.(

The End Of The Age – A Time Of Fear And Terror

The problem God’s people face right now, as the end of this age gets closer, is that we can be affected by what we see in the daily news. We see unstable nations with nuclear weapons. We see wars in the Middle East, the threats of wars in Europe, trade wars between nations and the threat of an EMP attack on the USA… the list appears endless.

We see volcanoes, earthquakes and freak weather around the world. We are warned about these events in Matthew 24, Luke 21 and Mark 13.

Jesus Himself told us how to react:

“And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: SEE THAT YE BE NOT TROUBLED: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.” (Matthew 24:6)

Matthew uses the word “troubled” – don’t be frightened…

Luke uses a different word…

“But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, BE NOT TERRIFIED: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by.” (Luke 21:9)

This is not our world – we are witnesses of the end time events…

Note where the “terror” comes from:

”I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror…(Leviticus 26:16)

The sword without, and terror within…(Deuteronomy 32:25)

God’s people, have this promise:

Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day.(Psalm 91:5)

Alert To Events Around Us

After revealing end time events to His disciples, Christ gave this instruction:

“Watch ye therefore and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.” (Luke 21:36)

Then – a warning to any asleep:

“Go back to what you heard and believed at first; hold to it firmly. Repent and turn to me again. If you don’t wake up, I will come to you suddenly, as unexpected as a thief…” (Revelation 3:3 New Living Translation)

Then – a promise to those who DO remain alert:

“But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. For when THEY shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon THEM, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.” (1 Thessalonians 5:1-4)
