Democracy in Chaos:

"Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time..." (Sir Winston Churchill – 11 November 1947)

The Chaos of Babel:

Before we specifically examine democracy today, and why it appears to find itself in even greater chaos than normal, there is a vital principal we need to keep in mind: Democracy is simply one of the many forms of human government – all of them based ultimately on the same satanic Babylonian mindset – as Mr Armstrong explains:

"Satan found in one of the great-grandsons of Noah, Nimrod, the grandson of Ham, a very able and powerful man who could be used politically. Through Satan’s influence, instilling great ambition through greed and pride, this Nimrod organized the people into a system of human government by which man ruled over man contrary to the principles established by God ...

"... This BABYLONISH principle of government, intertwined with economic manipulation, has ruled the world ever since. It has ruled under various forms — whether called oligarchy, monarchy, dictatorship, autocracy, democracy, communism or Naziism — but it’s the same old BABYLONISH PRINCIPLE under slightly different modes of administration ...

"... regardless of the particular form of administration, this CIVILIZATION that holds the entire world in its organised grip today is the same old BABYLONISH SYSTEM started at the original BABYLON by Nimrod!

"Babylon means “CONFUSION.” Competition and strife have produced confusion in the world. And God is not the author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33)." ( How Would Jesus Vote for President? GN October/November 1984)

Similar Times Today:

Today we daily find ourselves witnessing total gridlock and parliamentary chaos here in the UK regarding Brexit. While in the USA the open animosity shown by the media towards the president continues unabated. And at the same time, in towns and cities across France, driven by rising fuel prices, the high cost of living and claims that a disproportionate burden of the government's tax reforms are falling on the working and middle classes, the 'Yellow Vests' movement, as they call themselves, is calling for the resignation of their president Emmanuel Macron. Well does Mr Armstrong point out above how this entire current civilisation – founded on competition, strife, greed and pride – will inevitably produce confusion .... as it flows from an underlying system that is truly Babylonish in nature and therefore something God wants His people to have absolutely no part in.

  • And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
  • And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
  • For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.
  • And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
  • For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. (Revelation 18:1-5)
A Wise Historical View:

Around the time the original thirteen US states were adopting their new constitution in 1787, doing so largely in the hope of forming a better governmental system organised as a democratic republic, a man called Alexander Fraser Tytler (Lord Woodhouselee), in his role as a history professor at the University of Edinburgh, gave this ominous warning about democracy. He was uniquely placed to do so through his academic studies of a number of ancient kingdoms – not least of which included Greece and Rome:

Democracy is "nothing better than a Utopian theory, a splendid chimera, descriptive of a state of society that never did, and never could exist; a republic not of men, but of angels", for "While man is being instigated by the love of power – a passion visible in an infant, and common to us even with the inferior animals – he will seek personal superiority in preference to every matter of a general concern" ...

... A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.

The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

  • From bondage to spiritual faith;
  • From spiritual faith to great courage;
  • From courage to liberty;
  • From liberty to abundance;
  • From abundance to complacency;
  • From complacency to apathy;
  • From apathy to dependence;
  • From dependence back into bondage. ( – Alexander Tytler )
A Laodicean Prelude:

Today, in the Israeliteish Western world, we would appear to be in what Tytler predicted as the inevitable age of apathy bordering on dependence. The next stage is therefore back into bondage – something that also fits well with our understanding of biblical prophecy. The current stage is very much therefore a Laodicean prelude – a society out of which the Laodicean church will ultimately form – and one within which we should currently be able to clearly see the Laodicean mindset, documented by God himself in Scripture, expressed as part of the underlying character of that society.

First is the name – Laodicea – which has the meaning "let the people decide", something plainly expressed within the very concept of democracy itself, (Gk:' government by the people') and therefore taken as an inalienable right for all within our society. Next is an insipid, lukewarm – neither cold nor hot – response to anything of a godly nature, writ large in an apathetic society that tolerates sin of all kinds – be it homosexuality, transgender acceptance, infidelity, TV violence, murder of the unborn ... and the list goes on. While at the same time violently opposing any who do not adhere to their politically correct mantra on things such as racism, homophobia, transphobia, feminism ... and once again the list goes on. Yet it is a people who simultaneously claim to be rich and increased with goods and in need of nothing – both physically and spiritually – hellbent on their own personal pleasure binge and the good life – all seemingly oblivious to the steadily increasing national debt currently approaching an eye watering $22 trillion in the USA alone! And utterly oblivious to the lack of moral character involved in their approach to life! Certainly a ripe candidate for Tytler's prophesied "collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship".

  • And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;
  • I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
  • So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
  • Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: (Revelation 3:14-17)
Pure Democracy?

But the democratic chaos we are currently witnessing contains a unique twist that hasn't been seen before. A few nights ago when I was watching the evening news on the TV a couple were interviewed briefly during the riots in France. The amazing thing was that until the riots they had never even seen one another – holding views, diametrically opposite – one supporting the far right, the other the far left. So how did they possibly come together to demand the reforms the Yellow Vest movement insist on? The answer: social media and the mobile phone.

There is another commonality to what has been seen in country after country, which is that the protests and political rebellion are organic rather than led by traditional groups or acknowledged leaders. Brexit caught political leaders by surprise. Trump's victory in 2016 was unforeseen in large part because it was from the bottom up and aimed at the establishments of both parties ...

... But the world was becoming increasingly disorderly before Trump became president and he probably was elected because of that disorder. Instability and unrest are now commonplace, testing the strength of elected leaders and creating fertile ground for those in reaction. As Maddox put it, "This is a difficult time to run a modern democracy." (

What we are seeing – with this technological empowerment – is, if anything, a purer form of democracy than has ever been possible before. People are now able to become a political party of one it seems – free to express their views in a public way that has never been even dreamed of in previous times. But what we need to keep in mind is that regardless of this being something that appears new, it is in fact merely part of the same old Babylonian system – founded on competition, strife, greed and pride – that inevitably produces confusion ... yet in this case such confusion is being magnified to an even greater degree because of the plethora of widely divergent views being promoted.

The Same Old Spirit:

What we are witnessing is an inevitable lead up to the greatest time of trouble the world will have ever seen (Matthew 24:21). The irony is that just as the current chaos appears to be being magnified by the technological progress found within the mobile phone and social media, so the inevitable coming clampdown – prophesied to control a person's ability to trade – also appears almost certain to be made possible by very similar computer-based technology:

  • And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
  • And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. (Revelation 13:16-17)

The vital thing to keep in mind is that the spirit basis behind both the current democratic chaos and the coming dictatorial bondage is and will be identical – a Babylonian, satanic spirit of: self-centredness, lust, greed, vanity, jealousy, envy, resentment, competition, strife, bitterness, and hate.

Satan argued for the GETTING way. Competition, he argued, is the lifeblood of activity. Self-desire provides incentive to endeavour. Vanity spurs to action. And so, in Satan’s philosophy, self-desire, competition, strife provide the root principle for accomplishment. The way of GETTING is the way of progress and advancement ...

... Satan’s philosophy is the philosophy of the world today. On it our present civilization has been built. A civilization human beings love and cherish, and for which they patriotically sacrifice their lives! A civilization developed on desire for self-gain, competition, strife! In it success is determined by HOW MUCH an individual has been able to GET, not on how well he or she has served. ( Is God Fair? – GN June/July 1985)

A Different Spirit:

What is required therefore is not merely a change of government ... not just a change of laws ... not only a change of leader ... but a fundamental change of spirit – something no human government can provide. We've got to change from get to give, from hate to love, intolerance to patience, harshness to gentleness, from sin to goodness, unbelief to faith, arrogance to meekness, excess to temperance ... which will then bring about more far-reaching, global changes ... i.e. from war to peace, from sadness to joy, and indeed – from today's chaotic madness to rulership from a sound mind. In short, to a world, a society, a civilisation crammed full of every attribute that flows as righteous fruit from God's Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23, II Timothy 1:7)

  • For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. (Isaiah 9:6-7)
  • And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; (Isaiah 11:1-2)
  • Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.(Ezekiel 36:25-27)
  • And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him. (Daniel 7:27)
  • For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. (Matthew 6:13)
  • He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. (Revelation 22:20)
