VATICAN - The European project needs to be relaunched according to the Vatican's top diplomat as he warned the Holy See is "concerned" about the rise of populism. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, warned European Union chiefs must seize the moment to "reset" the bloc in the wake of Brexit.
The top diplomat stressed the religious state in the city of Rome is "concerned" about populism engulfing Europe and said the time has come for leaders to reform the union. Populist anti-immigrant parties have made gains in a number of European countries, including Italy, France and the Netherlands, threatening the future of the EU.
Geert Wilders launched his Dutch election campaign with plans to crackdown on migrants and polls predict Front National leader Marine Le Pen will win the first round of France's presidential election. Both politicians have threatened to take their countries out of the EU if they win power.
Cardinal Parolin told Vatican Radio the European project must be "relaunched" ahead of the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome. He said: “It is obvious there are many tensions, many difficulties, but they are also able to become, as they say, a ‘kairos’ — an opportune moment — to reset the political relationship on a new basis.”
EU member states have pledged to use the March 25 anniversary as an opportunity to "rebuild" the crumbling bloc which has struggled to cope with the arrival of more than 1.3 million migrants since the start of 2015. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has vowed to unite Europe and will join EU leaders in the Italian capital next month to celebrate the Treaty of Rome.
The Cardinal's comments come as he launched a blistering attack on out-of touch politicians. Recognising the gap between the political elite and voters, Cardinal Parolin criticised politics for "sometimes being too distant". He called on leaders to “grasp the needs of the people, of real people, and must be able to give answers that are real answers, so that people come back to live and to hope”.
The Cardinal, who has been touted as a future Pope, was speaking after a meeting with Italian President Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni and other officials.

The question is – how do they intend to “RESET THE BLOC”?
For over 80 years, the warning has gone out that at the end of this age, 10 nations of Europe, in spite of their divergent histories, many languages and different political backgrounds, will unite to form a huge superpower. The “glue” holding these nations together willl be religion.
In 1979, Mr Armstrong wrote:
“I have been proclaiming and writing, ever since 1935, that the final one of the seven eras of the Holy Roman Empire is coming in our generation – a ‘United States of Europe,’ combining ten nations or groups of nations in Europe – with A UNION OF CHURCH AND STATE.” (Plain Truth - January 1979 - WHAT NOW?)
1962 - “United within ancient boundaries of the Holy Roman Empire; united by the common SPIRITUAL BOND OF UNIVERSAL CATHOLICISM …at least ten nations of modern Europe will march onto the scene of world history as the greatest single human force ever seen by man!” (The Plain Truth, March 1962)
1968 - “The 17th chapter of Revelation plainly describes a spiritual-political union of TEN KINGS, ten military/political leaders, and a great spiritual leader. For decades, [we] have been proclaiming the eventual creation of some form of united Europe – showing the many difficulties to be resolved, the ancient nationalistic antagonisms, the memories of Germany's neighbors of World War II, and the various religious barriers. We have proclaimed repeatedly that THE ULTIMATE UNIFYING FORCE WOULD BE RELIGIOUS. We have shown how the prophecies of your Bible proclaim a great universal religious fervour will finally break down all remaining barriers to a full economic-political-military-religious union in Europe!” (The Plain Truth, August 1968, page 42)
1985 - “Daniel's prophecy in chapter 2 pictures 10 nations in Europe in our time right now, as the 10 toes on the two feet of the great symbolic image. Five of those toes picture five nations in Western Europe and five in Eastern Europe.
