UK - Theresa May is refusing to quit as Prime Minister despite her disastrous election night as the UK voted for a hung parliament. Mrs May’s decision to call a snap election backfired in spectacular fashion as she lost the Conservatives’ majority in the House of Commons as Labour made significant gains.
Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, urged Mrs May to resign as he said she should "go and make way for a government that is truly representative of this country". Meanwhile, even senior Tory figures have suggested she should consider her position. However, Mrs May insisted the UK needed a period of stability as she delivered a speech following her re-election as the MP for Maidenhead. She said: “At this time, more than anything else, this country needs a period of stability.
"If, as the indications have shown and if this is correct, the Conservative Party has won the most seats and probably the most votes, then it will be incumbent on us to ensure that we have that period of stability and that is exactly what we will do." On a night of high drama when most pundits predicted an overwhelming Tory victory Mrs May failed to strengthen her hand ahead of Brexit negotiations as she had hoped.
What Happens Next?
In the UK, they now have a hung Parliament, political instability, the Pound falling in value and Brexit negotiations in chaos. This will almost certainly lead to a period of greater instability – and even possibly another general election.
Meanwhile, in the USA, Mr Trump has withdrawn from the climate change agreement which is further isolating America. The US is possibly also on the brink of several wars – in North Korea, in Iran and Syria. Tension is also high in the China Sea, where China is trying to control the whole area – a major world trade route.
No matter where you look, instability is the key word! Both the UK and the USA are suffering a period of upheaval. This could well lead to a loss of confidence – both politically and in the world financial sector, which itself is already close to collapse.
With Britain and America being seen as weak, this could force the Europeans to unite in order to protect themselves from the threat from Russia. The end time Beast power is forged of necessity. The ten nations “...have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast” (Revelation 17:13). Nations tend to be of one mind only when faced with a common threat. They will only give up their sovereignty in extreme situations. Those extreme situations are developing fast – right now!
The Warning Went Out! Here is what Mr Armstrong had to say about this situation 37 years ago:
“You may be sure the West European leaders are conferring hurriedly and secretly about how and how soon they may unite and provide a united European military force so they can defend themselves! And so they will no longer have to give in meekly to Russia! And who will they blame for their humiliation and their necessity now to have a united Europe, with a united government, a common currency, and a common military force as great or greater than either [Russia] or the USA.?
They will blame the US! And when they are strong enough to assert themselves, they will first attack Britain for standing firm with the US, and then they will return a lot of hydrogen bombs the US has stored now in Europe!
So says almighty God in his word! They can unite ONLY through the Vatican. It will be a church-state union. It won’t last long, but will create HAVOC unprecedented!” (Pastor General's Report - February 8, 1980)
As we move into more turbulent times, we should find it reassuring to remember that whatever happens, always be aware of who has absolute control:
“Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, For wisdom and might are His. And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding. He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness, And light dwells with Him.” (Daniel 2:20-22, NKJV)
