UK - The true scale of Theresa May’s impending defeat can be revealed as she faces a mountain of opposition to her floundering Withdrawal Agreement. The Prime Minister is facing a trouncing with around 400 MPs expected to vote against her deal on Tuesday. One unnamed Tory MP told the Daily Telegraph: “We’re heading towards a brick wall at 100mph and are going to be smashed to smithereens.”
Commons Brexiters including top Tories Boris Johnson and Iain Duncan Smith are hoping the agreement will be rejected so they can rip it up and leave the EU without a deal. Mr Duncan Smith urged fellow MPs to vote against the deal which he described as “flawed”. The former Tory leader insisted the UK would have Brexit in name only if Theresa May’s deal were to be passed.
He said he much preferred a no-deal Brexit to the current deal, saying: “Only by leaving the EU on WTO terms can the UK fully take back control of its borders and deal with these issues. In taking back control of our migration policy we are also giving notice to industry that we will have to invest and train to a far greater degree than they have for some time.”
