EGYPT - The Muslim Brotherhood opposition group in Egypt has called for a review of the 1978 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel and says it should be resubmitted to a "freely elected" parliament for approval. Regarded as the best-organised political group in Egypt, the Brotherhood is poised to play an influential role in politics in the country after the fall of the regime of Hosni Mubarak, the former president.

Mississippi floods force evacuations near Memphis

USA - The rising Mississippi river lapped over downtown Memphis streets on Thursday as a massive wall of water threatened to unleash near record flooding all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Water lapped over Riverside Drive and onto Beale Street in Memphis, and threatened some homes on Mud Island, a community of about 5,000 residents with a river theme park. The island connects to downtown Memphis by a bridge and causeway.

UK - The mass cull of farm animals to control the spread of foot-and-mouth disease may be unnecessary if there is a new outbreak, scientists suggest. A new analysis of disease transmission suggests that future outbreaks might be controlled by early detection and killing only affected animals.

Netanyahu in Britain, Hears Threats to Recognize PA State

UK - Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu is paying an official, three-day visit to Britain and France - whose leaders are now said to be threatening to recognize a Palestinian state. Greeting Netanyahu on Wednesday at 10 Downing Street, England's Prime Minister David Cameron said, "Britain is a good friend of Israel and our support for Israel and Israel's security is something I have described in the past, and will do so again, as unshakeable. We are strong friends of Israel."

Food Prices Rise to Near-Record as Inflation Accelerates

ROME, ITALY - World food prices rose to near a record in April as grain costs advanced, adding pressure to inflation that is accelerating from Beijing to Brasilia and spurring central banks to raise interest rates. An index of 55 commodities rose to 232.1 points from 231 points in March, the United Nations' Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organization said in a report on its website today. The gauge climbed to an all-time high of 237.2 in February before dropping 2.6 percent in March.

SYRIA - Hundreds of Syrian troops stormed the Damascus suburb of Saqba overnight - breaking into houses and arresting about 300 people, witnesses say. NASA - Britain could face widespread power blackouts and be left without critical communication signals for long periods of time, after the earth is hit by a once-in-a-generation "space storm", Nasa has warned. National power grids could overheat and air travel be severely disrupted while electronic items, navigation devices and major satellites could stop working after the Sun reaches its maximum power in a few years.

NASA - A giant asteroid weighing 55 million tonnes will just miss the Earth later this year, Nasa experts have predicted. The rock, which is quarter of a mile across, will pass between our planet and the moon in November and will be visible with small telescopes.

USA - Growth in the food stamp program appeared to reach a plateau in February - with 14.3% of the population relying on the safety net program. The number of food stamp recipients was essentially flat in February, the most recent month available, with 44.2 million Americans receiving benefits, according a new report from the US Department of Agriculture.

All Eyes on the Mississippi River

MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE, USA - The Mississippi River continues to rise, so much so that its tributaries are starting to flow backwards. At Tom Lee Park, preparations for Memphis in May continue knowing that the worst is still yet to come. It's a sight not often seen; the Wolf River and Nonconnah Creek are flowing backwards. The swelling river cannot take on much more water.
