UK - The funniest thing I’ve ever heard is that the kids are rioting in Paris because of “educational inequality”. I was taught in classes of 30 in wooden huts so cold you could see your breath in winter, but it never occurred to me to burn down the town hall. This isn’t a “legitimate expression of rage”, it is a pathology, evidence that the whole of Europe – not just France – has a cancer, of which violence and decay are merely the symptoms. Our tumour is bad philosophy. It has been growing for years.
Disorder also broke out this weekend in Albania, Belgium, Italy and Portugal – and why shouldn’t Britain be next? Smaller scale protests have been happening here for some time; trust in government is zero. Almost every Western nation is plagued by mass migration and welfare-state collapse, the former fuelling social tension while the latter, designed to paper over such cracks, is running out of cash.
It’s going to happen. We are all on the same fast path towards fiscal and societal breakdown, and, as others have joked, any British pleasure at seeing France fall is reduced by the creeping fear that we are next. The question is, do we have the same cultural and philosophical resources to withstand the pain?
