The World Economic Forum (WEF) has grown from a small huddle in the 1970s, when it was started by the academic Klaus Schwab, to hosting more than 3,000 participants, of which 1,200 are chief executives or company chairs and more than 50 are world leaders.

"We have particular reservations about an international conference intended to advance peace between the parties that does not involve them - indeed which is taking place against the wishes of the Israelis - and which is taking place just days before the transition to a new American President when the US will be the ultimate guarantor of any agreement," a Foreign Office statement said.

VATICAN - Pope Francis has once again weighed in on Europe’s migrant crisis, urging immigrants to respect local laws and customs while conserving their own cultural idiosyncrasies. After his midday Angelus prayer on Sunday, the Pope told the crowd gathered in Saint Peter’s Square that the day was marked for the celebration of the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, and that this year’s commemoration would focus on “Underage Migrants, Vulnerable and Voiceless.”

Pope meets Palestinian leader; Vatican calls Jerusalem holy

VATICAN - The Vatican stressed the sacred nature of Jerusalem on Saturday as the Palestinian leader warned that prospects for peace could suffer if the incoming Trump administration goes ahead with plans to move the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The developments came as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met with Pope Francis and inaugurated the Palestinian embassy to the Holy See. The Vatican has long sought an internationally guaranteed status for Jerusalem that safeguards its sacred character. In its communique after the Abbas meeting, the Holy See didn't refer to Jerusalem by name but said during the talks "emphasis was placed on the importance of safeguarding the sanctity of the holy places for believers of all three of the Abrahamic religions."

Yet a second story on Saturday did not contain the claim.

Donald Trump 'wants EU to break up in wake of Brexit vote'

USA - Donald Trump supports the break-up of the European Union in the wake of Brexit, an outgoing US ambassador has suggested. Anthony Gardner, who is departing as ambassador to the EU, said that senior figures in the president-elect’s transition team had been asking EU officials which countries will follow Britain in voting to leave the bloc. Mr Trump has made no secret of his support for Brexit and has repeatedly praised Nigel Farage.

UK - While the track record of the Sunday Times over the past 24 hours is somewhat spotty, following a report that as his first foreign trip abroad once officially president, Trump is planning a summit with Putin in Reykjavik, which in turn was promptly denied by Trump staffers who called the story "fantasy", overnight the paper also reported that UK Prime Minister Theresa May will announce that Britain is "seeking a clean and hard Brexit" in a speech this week that will promise to create a “strong new partnership” with the European Union.

70 Nations Gathered In Paris Call For The Creation Of A Palestinian State

FRANCE - On Sunday, the 70 nations that gathered in Paris for a conference on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict unanimously agreed to call for the creation of a Palestinian state. The joint declaration that was issued at the conclusion of the conference also endorsed UN Security Council Resolution 2334 which was adopted on December 23rd and the six principles that US Secretary of State John Kerry laid out in his 71 minute speech on December 28th.

GERMANY - Angela Merkel has renewed her call for the European Union to have its own army, warning the bloc will not be able to rely on others to guarantee its security with Donald Trump in the White House and Britain set to leave. The Berlin chief said Brussels will have to take on “more responsibility in the world” as she predicted a cooling in trans-Atlantic ties under the eurosceptic President-elect.
