Francis, who made his comments in an address to leaders of Italy's national journalists' guild, said reporters had to go the extra mile to seek the truth, particularly in an age of round-the-clock news coverage. Spreading rumors is an example of "terrorism, of how you can kill a person with your tongue", he said. "This is even more true for journalists because their voice can reach everyone and this is a very powerful weapon."

In Italy, a number of newspapers are highly politicized and are regularly used to discredit those with differing political views, sometimes reporting unsubstantiated rumors about their private lives.

Investors in Deutsche, which has been described as the world's riskiest large bank by the International Monetary Fund, took fright and its shares fell over 7 percent to €10.55, their lowest level since being listed on Germany's Xetra exchange in 1992.

Germany's largest bank has had a torrid couple of years. The company has lost almost half its market value this year alone, as a string of legal cases and negative interest rates have raised concerns among investors over the bank's capital position and future profitability.

Last year Deutsche Bank made a net loss of €6.8 billion, weighed down by enormous restructuring costs, risk provisions and lower income. Mr Cryan is cutting thousands of jobs to focus the bank on its most profitable operations.

Deutsche Bank was one of many lenders to be caught up in the Libor-rigging scandal and was last year forced to fire seven senior employees, pay a £1.7 billion fine for rigging interest rates and admit criminal guilt.

And yet it has become increasingly hard to ignore the slow-motion car crash that is Deutsche Bank, or to avoid the conclusion that something very nasty is developing at what was once seen as Europe’s strongest financial institution. Its shares have been in free-fall for a year, touching a new low of 10.7 euros on Monday, down from 27 euros a year ago. Over the weekend, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel waded into the mess, briefing that there could be no government bail-out of the bank.

But hold on. Surely that is an extra-ordinary decision? If the German government does not stand behind the bank, then inevitably all its counter-parties – the other banks and institutions it deals with – are going to start feeling very nervous about trading with it. As we know from 2008, once confidence starts to evaporate, a bank is in big, big trouble. In fact, if Deutsche does go down, it is looking increasingly likely that it will take Merkel with it – and quite possibly the euro as well.

Deutsche Bank has been wobbly for a year now. Back in July, it announced a slump in profits and revenues. Back in February, the Bank’s co-CEO John Cryan put out a statement re-assuring staff and investors that the institution was ‘rock solid’ amid an earlier slide in the share price. Anyone whose memory stretches back a whole eight years will know that is the kind of thing bank CEOs say about three minutes before the whole thing goes pop.

Ever since then, the news has gone from bad to worse. Deutsche has struggled to cuts costs and restore profitability, legal challenges have mounted, and then earlier this month the US Justice Department hit the bank with a $14 billion fine over sales of mortgage securities. In its pomp, Deutsche could have written out a cheque with a nonchalant shrug. Right now, no one is sure where it can get the money from.

"The Syrian government puts all the responsibility for aggression on the US, as the facts show, that it was a deliberate attack, but not a mistake – even if America says the opposite,” Muallem said during a general debate at the 71st Regular Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“This vile aggression proves that the US and its allies are accomplices of Islamic State and other terror groups,” he stressed. On September 17, Syrian troops encircled by Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants near the town of Deir ez-Zor were bombed by US-led coalition warplanes. Sixty-two soldiers were killed in the airstrike, which was followed by an offensive by the jihadists on the positions of the government forces.

Ms Palacio said elections in Germany, Italy, France and the Netherlands suggest EU policy - at least for the nearest future - will be defined by member-states rather than the European institutions. She said as a result of Brexit it is clear the EU will no longer be the "Brussels-centric, deeply integrated Shangri-La long sought by many at the Commission".

Ms Palacio said: "In fact, with member states’ domestic politics playing a more important role than the European Council in driving whatever EU policy momentum exists, even an intergovernmental EU may be too much to hope for." And she echoed recent remarks made by EU Council President Donald Tusk at last week's summit in Bratislava who said “giving new powers to European institutions is not the desired recipe” in the wake of Britain's decision to pull out.

Ms Palacio continued: "It is likely that parochial interests will become even more dominant, at least until major elections are complete." She continued: "Put simply, for much of the public, EU institutions lack legitimacy. The reasons are well known: poor communication, a democratic deficit, finger pointing between member states and the Commission, a flawed institutional architecture. The result is clear: in the struggle over how Europe will develop, the EU institutions lack the authority or support to put up much of a fight – or even fully enter the ring."

The Sunday Mail, Zimbabwe’s “leading family newspaper,” has published accounts of a number of Libyans who expressed regret over Muammar Gaddafi’s overthrow in 2011, despite the fact some of them even took up arms against him. As one said: “I joined the revolution in the first days and fought against Gaddafi,” former revolutionary fighter Mohammed, 31, said from the southern city of Murzuq. “Before 2011, I hated Gaddafi more than anyone. But now, life is much, much harder, and I have become his biggest fan.”

In 2011, we were told Gaddafi was going to commit grave bloodshed against his own people and that as a result, the international community needed to intervene to protect Libyan civilians. This proved to be false, according to an analysis of statistics obtained by Human Rights Watch. Further, an investigation conducted by Amnesty International also found a number of claims against Gaddafi were fabricated.

Before the NATO onslaught, Libya had the highest standard of living of any country in Africa. This meant the people enjoyed state-sponsored healthcare, high literacy rates, and other benefits that come with living in a relatively prosperous society. In 2015 alone, the country fell 27 places on the UN Human Development Index ratings. According to UNICEF, there are now two million Libyan children out of school.

The scientists zeroed in on times of high tidal stress, which can occur twice a month, during the full moon and new moon. During these moments, high tides are at their highest — flooding the tallest reaches of a beach — and about six hours later, low tides are at their lowest for the month, with seawater retreating to the farthest point toward the ocean. This produces massive movement of ocean water and produces high tidal stress. And that tidal stress can change the stress on the fault, and, these scientists suggest, help push small earthquakes that happen to grow into very large earthquakes.

“When tides are very large, small earthquakes tend to grow,” Satoshi Ide, lead author of the report and professor of seismology at the University of Tokyo, said in an interview. “This suggests that the probability of a tiny rock failure expanding to a gigantic rupture increases with increasing tidal stress levels,” Ide and his coauthors wrote in the report, published this month in the journal Nature Geosciences.

Or put another way: The tidal forces give a slight nudge to a fault on the cusp of rupturing. “It could be just the amount of stress that is the ‘straw that breaks the camel’s back,’ so to speak,” said Nicholas van der Elst, a US Geological Survey geophysicist. “So it makes sense that an earthquake would be more likely to happen, and coalesce into a larger earthquake, if there is just a little, additional, push.”

And when Gleicke uses the word "we" it's not just in her official function as the government's commissioner for the new federal states. Gleicke herself is from Thuringia, in eastern Germany. Until 1990, her home was part of the German Democratic Republic. It might seem strange that, 26 years after reunification, people in Germany still talk of the "new federal states." But that's not a big issue for Gleicke.

She's much more concerned about the socio-political developments east of the Elbe River, specifically, the noticeable rise in xenophobia. The number of violent right-wing extremist acts has increased "dramatically" in relation to the population in the East. Right-wing extremism, xenophobia and intolerance are a "very serious" threat to the eastern states' economic development, said Gleicke.

The increase in violent incidents is more than just a "simple alarm signal" when they're also carried out by mainstream members of society, or when such people silently stand by, she said. Anti-immigrant hatred in eastern Germany has attracted negative headlines around the world.

1. Change your password. Even though Yahoo says it will notify potentially affected users, change your password anyway to make sure. It shouldn’t have to be said in 2016, but people still do it, don’t use the same password on multiple sites.

2. Set up two-factor authentication. Passwords are inherently flawed, but two-factor authentication is the best way to secure them. When you’re updating your account, Yahoo will ask you if you want to do this. Do it. Essentially, it will send a text message to your smartphone with a unique login code each time you log into your account. Yes, it can be a pain. But it will also make it much less likely that someone else will be able to access your account.

3. Keep an eye on your account. While it’s hard to say what to look for, look for things that don’t look right. Are there emails in your “sent” box that you didn’t send? Are you getting shady-looking emails that ask you to click on links? Or official-looking emails asking for your password, or other personal information? Don’t fall for it. Remember, constant vigilance is the price of free email.

And if you’re one of those people snickering, “Who still uses Yahoo email?” go check yourself. If you once had a Yahoo account but you don’t use it anymore, log back on, delete what’s in there, and officially close it. Ten-year-old data can bite you in the butt just as easily as current information.

The meeting was part of the UN General Assembly (UNGA). It’s only the fourth time in history that the heads of state have met to discuss a health issue, but the urgency of the current crisis of drug-resistant bacteria is clear: it’s estimated that the number of people who die from antibiotic resistance infections will reach 10 million a year in 2050.

“It’s not that it may happen in the future, it’s a very present reality,” said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. He added that over 20,000 newborn children are expected to die each year from infections that do not respond to antibiotics. Resistance to HIV drugs is also on the rise, and leaders are concerned about the potential for malaria-drug resistance.

Antimicrobial resistance, often referred to as AMR, “is a major global threat. Some scientists call it a slow-motion tsunami. The situation is bad and getting worse,” said Dr Margaret Chan, director general of the World Health Organization (WHO). Chan says sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea are becoming increasingly resistant to treatment.
