The following stories from this week’s news make it clear that some of the world’s biggest players in the financial markets are seeking secure ground as fast as they can. They are the ‘insiders’ who, not only have a clear view of what is happening in the economy, but some of them are the people who make it happen.
RUSSIA - The chairman of the Russian Constitutional Court has said that Barack Obama’s statements about American exceptionalism were very similar to propaganda used by Nazi Germany and equally dangerous to world peace.
EUROPE - A secret government memo today reveals how a trade war between European Union countries is damaging the British economy. The damning Whitehall assessment – seen by the Telegraph – has found that France and other EU countries are hampering new “free-trade” deals because they want to protect their farmers from the extra competition. David Cameron claims that the power of Brussels to negotiate these free-trade agreements with parts of the world such as the United States is a critical reason why Britain must not leave the EU. But the memorandum suggests that Britain is losing out on £2.5 billion a year in potential trade as a result of the ongoing delays to a proposed deal between the EU and Latin America.

INDONESIA - Choking plumes of hot ash, thick smoke and torrents of lava - such apocalyptic scenes could be witnessed in Indonesia as Mount Sinabung struck, killing at least seven people. Social media has been flooded with photos and videos of the devastating volcano rumbling to life. The 2,460-meter-high Sinabung, [8070 feet] one of 127 active volcanoes in Indonesia, has been erupting since Saturday. Six farmers died on the spot, and the seventh died in the hospital, while another two are in critical condition. "It is not immediately clear how many people were in Gamber because when the mountain spewed clouds of hot ash, there was not supposed to be any activity in the area," National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho added.
SICILY - Lava bombs and a giant luminous ash cloud were seen spewing from the peak of Mount Etna in dramatic video footage captured on Saturday. Reports by Russia Today claim the latest eruptions are Mount Etna's most significant activity since the volcano experienced one of its most severe eruptions in decades. The 3,350m volcano (10,922 feet), has experienced increasing emissions and activity this last week.
COSTA RICA - A volcano erupted suddenly in central Costa Rica today, belching smoke and ash up to 3,000m (9,840ft) into the air. The volcanic ash is settling on several cities, sending hundreds of people to hospitals, complaining of breathing difficulties and skin problems. This took place despite assurances from Geological "experts" who said that swarms of small earthquakes in and near the volcano for the past few weeks "are not signs of an imminent eruption." Some of those same "experts" have said the exact same words about three volcanoes on the US west coast which have suddenly begun experiencing earthquake swarms: Mount Saint Helens, Mount Hood and Mount Rainier in Oregon and Washington states. When the Costa Rica volcano erupted today, the "experts" were stunned and the public was totally unprepared. Will this be the case on the US west coast as well?
