Welby: backing gay marriage could be 'catastrophic' for Christians elsewhere

UK - The Archbishop of Canterbury has said the Church of England accepting gay marriage could be "catastrophic" for Christians in other parts of the world. The Most Rev Justin Welby told LBC that hundreds of Christians in Africa had been killed by people who associated Christianity with homosexuality. He warned the same could happen if the Church of England backed gay unions. Same-sex marriage became legal in England and Wales last week, but is not supported by the Church. On his first live phone-in on LBC Radio, Archbishop Welby spoke about a trip to Africa, and recalled visiting a grave where 369 people had been buried. He said the victims had been killed because local people believed allowing a Christian community to exist would mean "we would all be made to become homosexual".

Serious reading takes a hit from online scanning and skimming, researchers say

USA - Claire Handscombe has a commitment problem online. Like a lot of Web surfers, she clicks on links posted on social networks, reads a few sentences, looks for exciting words, and then grows restless, scampering off to the next page she probably won’t commit to.

'This is Our Country - Period'

ISRAEL - Deputy Education Minister Avi Wortzman (Jewish Home) sharply criticized the Palestinian Authority (PA) on Friday for making endless demands to continue peace talks.

US reviews Mideast peace push as tit-for-tat moves multiply

USA - Washington said Friday it was reviewing its push for a Middle East peace agreement as a spiral of tit-for-tat moves by Israel and the Palestinians took hard-won talks close to collapse. US Secretary of State John Kerry, who has invested more than a year of intensive shuttle diplomacy, said there were "limits" to the time Washington could devote to the process. "This is not open-ended," Kerry said in Morocco, adding that it was "reality check" time and he would evaluate with President Barack Obama Washington's next move. "There are limits to the amount of time and effort that the United States can spend if the parties themselves are unwilling to take constructive steps."

Japan orders military to strike any new North Korea missile launches

JAPAN - Japan has ordered a destroyer in the Sea of Japan to strike any ballistic missiles that may be launched by North Korea in the coming weeks after Pyongyang fired a Rodong medium-range missile over the sea, a government source said on Saturday. Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera issued the order on Thursday, but did not make it public in order to avoid putting a chill on renewed talks between Tokyo and Pyongyang, the first in more than a year, local media reported earlier. "The defense minister made the order from April 3rd through to the 25th to prepare for any additional missile launches," the source said.

'Eat pork or go hungry'

FRANCE - Far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen said on Friday it would prevent schools from offering non-pork alternatives to Muslim pupils in the 11 towns it won in local elections, saying such arrangements were contrary to France's secular values. France's republic has a strict secular tradition enforceable by law, but faith-related demands have risen in recent years, especially from the country's five-million-strong Muslim minority, the largest in Europe. 'We will not accept any religious demands in school menus,' Le Pen told RTL radio. 'There is no reason for religion to enter the public sphere, that's the law.' Pork is forbidden under Jewish and Muslim dietary laws.

Groundbreaking new laser technology could be used to control lightning

USA - Optical scientists at the University of Arizona and University of Central Florida have developed a new type of laser technology capable of sending high-intensity beams through the atmosphere much farther than was previously possible. The research, which was recently published in the journal Nature Photonics, is still in the laboratory phase. However, with further development, this technology could be used to divert lightning bolts away from buildings in the future. Here’s how that works: When the laser is fired, the high intensity beam leaves a channel of plasma (ionized molecules stripped of their electrons) in its wake. This column of plasma, in theory, could provide lightning bolts with a path of least resistance to the surface of the Earth, and thereby encourage them to strike in a specific place. We’re sure the military is thrilled by the prospect of raining down lighting on its enemies.

Mozilla CEO resigns, opposition to gay marriage drew fire

USA - Mozilla Chief Executive Brendan Eich has stepped down, the company said on Thursday, after an online dating service urged a boycott of the company's web browser because of a donation Eich made to opponents of gay marriage. The software company came under fire for appointing Eich as CEO last month. In 2008, he gave money to oppose the legalization of gay marriage in California, a hot-button issue especially at a company that boasts about its policy of inclusiveness and diversity. "We didn't act like you'd expect Mozilla to act," wrote Mozilla Executive Chairwoman Mitchell Baker in a blog post. "We didn't move fast enough to engage with people once the controversy started. We're sorry." While gay activists applauded the move, many in the technology community lamented the departure of Eich, who invented the programming language Javascript and co-founded Mozilla.

Scientists dismiss claims that Yellowstone volcano about to erupt

USA - Yellowstone National Park assured guests and the public on Thursday that a super-volcano under the park was not expected to erupt anytime soon, despite an alarmist video that claimed bison had been seen fleeing to avoid such a calamity. Yellowstone officials, who fielded dozens of calls and emails since the video went viral this week following an earthquake in the park, said the video actually shows bison galloping down a paved road that leads deeper into the park. "It was a spring-like day and they were frisky. Contrary to online reports, it's a natural occurrence and not the end of the world," park spokeswoman Amy Bartlett said.

George Soros’ real crusade: Legalizing marijuana in the US

USA - Billionaire philanthropist George Soros hopes the US goes to pot, and he is using his money to drive it there. With a cadre of like-minded, wealthy donors, Mr Soros is dominating the pro-legalization side of the marijuana debate by funding grass-roots initiatives that begin in New York City and end up affecting local politics elsewhere. Through a network of nonprofit groups, Mr Soros has spent at least $80 million on the legalization effort since 1994, when he diverted a portion of his foundation’s funds to organizations exploring alternative drug policies, according to tax filings. Mr Soros makes his donations through the Drug Policy Alliance, a nonprofit he funds with roughly $4 million in annual contributions from his Foundation to Promote an Open Society.

Farage calls for Britain to legalise all drugs

UK - Mr Farage said that he believes the war on drugs has been lost and Britain should look at legalising them - including heroin. The UK Independence Party leader made the highly controversial claim that Portugal, where drugs were decriminalised 12 years ago, may have a ‘more enlightened’ approach. He said in a television phone-in that he ‘hates drugs’, has never taken them, and has experience of the damage they can do to young people’s lives. But he believes the current laws criminalising users are ineffective, and would back a Royal Commission to look at alternatives including that in Portugal and some American states. Mr Farage admitted these were his personal views, and not Ukip policy, saying: ‘This is one subject where I differ strongly from my party’.

North Korea: World Must ‘Wait and See’ on Next Nuclear Test

NORTH KOREA - A North Korean official said at a UN news conference Friday that the world should “wait and see” what the government meant when it threatened earlier this week a ‘new form’ of nuclear test”. “The DPRK made it very clear, we will carry out a new form of nuclear test,” Deputy UN Ambassador Ri Tong Il of North Korea (DPRK) said, according to Reuters. “But I recommend you to wait and see what it is”. The UN Security Council condemned North Korea March 27 for firing two medium-range Rodong ballistic missiles into the sea a day earlier, calling it a breach of UN resolutions but drawing the ire of the North. On Sunday, the official Korean Central News Agency published a statement threatening a ‘new form’ of nuclear test, following three past tests, without elaborating on what that would mean.

Energy as a Weapon

EUROPE - The German Chancellor is suggesting that the EU should take a "new look at its energy policy" as a whole. As Angela Merkel confirmed last week, several EU countries are at least partially "very highly dependent" on "the supply of raw materials from Russia." Spurred on by the Ukrainian crisis, Berlin and Brussels could, however, in the long run, seek to liberate themselves.

Top Religious Zionist Rabbi: Allow Jewish Prayer on Temple Mount

TEMPLE MOUNT, JERUSALEM, ISRAEL - Influential Religious Zionist Rabbi Benny Lau – a nephew of Tel Aviv Chief Rabbi Meir Lau – said Thursday that he supported the rights of Yehuda Glick and his Temple Mount Faithful group to ascend the Mount to pray, even if he himself does not do so.

Israel cancels Palestinian prisoner release

ISRAEL - Israel has cancelled the release of a fourth group of Palestinian prisoners over the Palestinian leadership's pursuit of further UN recognition. Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni said Palestinian actions had violated the terms of the release, which was part of a US-backed peace process. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has applied to 15 UN conventions, accusing Israel of backtracking on its promises. Washington said Israel's latest move "creates challenges". But White House spokesman Jay Carney said it would not deter US Secretary of State John Kerry from keeping talks between both sides going.

“Just what is an APOSTLE?”
Just what is an Apostle?

Today we find the Church of God in a “wilderness of religious confusion!”

The confusion is not merely around the Church – within the religions of the world outside – but WITHIN the very heart of The True Church itself!

Listen to Me, You who know righteousness, You people in whose heart is My Law: …I have put My words in your mouth, I have covered you with the shadow of My hand, That I may plant the heavens, Lay the foundations of the earth, and say to Zion, “you are My people” (Isaiah 51:7,16)
