AFRICA - Africa is discovering a new spirit of optimism, reminiscent of the first decade of its post-colonial era. Despite inadequate infrastructure and at times even poorer governance, the continent has been attracting more and more interest from American and European investors, as well as Chinese, targeting such countries as Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Angola, Tanzania, and Rwanda to name a few.
USA - A snowstorm is spreading across the country this morning bringing with it a polar plunge in temperatures. Almost 1,500 flights were cancelled on Monday in advance of Tuesday's winter storm Janus that is forecast to bury the Northeast in up to 12 inches of snow.
USA - The Obama administration announced last week that it expects to approve corn and soybeans that have been genetically engineered by Dow Chemical company to tolerate the toxic herbicide — 2,4-D.
EGYPT - The results are in. Over 98 percent of Egyptians reportedly voted in favour of a new constitution. The lopsided result of the first vote since the ouster of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi formalizes the military-backed government control of the country. It has also already caused no small amount of eye-rolling.
NORTH KOREA - A recent geological study indicates North Korea could hold some 216 million tons of rare earths, minerals used in electronics such as smartphones and high definition televisions.
UK - The Prime Minister is set a deadline for detailing his EU reform plan as rebel Conservatives warn they could consider a leadership coup if the party is "hammered" in the Euro elections in May.

USA - The Latino population is projected to surpass that of whites in California in March to become the single largest "race or ethnic group," according to a report on shifting demographics in Governor Jerry Brown's 2014-15 budget proposal.
EUROPE - Nigel Farage says that we are now run by big business and big bureaucrats and that the European elections will be a battle for democracy.
USA - Antibiotic-resistant bacteria have been raising alarms for years, particularly in hospital environments where public health officials fear they can be transferred from patient to patient and are very difficult to treat.
CHINA - China’s holdings of US Treasuries increased $12.2 billion to a record $1.317 trillion in November, data released on the Treasury Department’s website showed.
USA - Security researchers at Proofpoint have uncovered the very first wide-scale hack that involved television sets and at least one refrigerator. Yes, a fridge.
USA - We are so lucky to live in a country where we have representation. Think about it – we all get to choose someone to go to Washington DC and look out for our best interests. EUROPE - Two opposing views marked the continuing debate over the future of Europe last week. The first came from Brussels where European Commissioner Viviane Reding said the upcoming European Parliament elections are an opportunity to “build a United States of Europe”.
CHINA - China has started building its second aircraft carrier as part of a growing push to develop what would be the world’s second biggest navy, according to reports in both China and Hong Kong.
