VATICAN - The Pope has offered blessings to the Communist leadership in China despite a worsening standoff over religious freedom in the country. In his annual Christmas address in St Peter’s Square in Rome, Benedict XVI spoke of the new leadership’s “high task” of leading a “noble people”, while issuing a plea for the Church to be given “esteem”.
USA - President Barack Obama is cutting short his Hawaiian holiday to leave for Washington on Wednesday to address the unfinished "fiscal cliff" negotiations with Congress, the White House said on Tuesday. As the clock ticks toward a January 1 deadline, efforts to avert a sharp rise in taxes and deep spending cuts have stalled, worrying world financial markets. [Mr] Obama and congressional lawmakers left Washington on Friday for the Christmas holidays with talks to avert the fiscal disaster in limbo.
EUROPE - Massive protests have been shaking Europe all year with tens of thousands of people hitting the streets. RT has been looking closely at what’s happening in the crisis-gripped European Union. With people protesting against austerity cuts and reduced budgets, the world has seen severe clashes, clouds of tear gas and violence raging all across Europe.
USA - A strong storm system that moved across Texas on Christmas Day spawned at least three tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and brisk winds that knocked down trees, killing one person near Houston. The severe storms are resulting from a meeting between a cold front and warmer Gulf air. Parts of North Texas, including Dallas and Fort Worth, could get snow later Tuesday. The Weather Channel’s Jim Cantore warns this could be the worst tornado outbreak on Christmas Day to strike the US. “I know you are busy (with) friends & family, but please be vigilant to what may be the worst tornado outbreak on Christmas Day in history,” Cantore said on Twitter.
UK/EUROPE - Britain's role in the European Union should be reduced to participation in a single market or free-trade zone, George Osborne has said. The Chancellor backed backbench Conservative calls to reduce significantly Britain’s involvement with the EU. His comments came as a senior German minister warned Britain not to “blackmail” its EU partners as it attempts to renegotiate its membership terms. In a US television interview, Mr Osborne said that Britain is “happy to be part of a single market” but will not be part of an ever more closely integrated EU core. “Britons want to be in Europe, not run by Europe,” Mr Osborne said in an interview recorded last week on a visit to New York.
UK - When it comes to Christmas, it might be safe to assume children will ask Santa for an extensive list of toys, games and treats. But a survey of their typical lists for Father Christmas has shown many have more serious concerns. Despite their material requests, the tenth most popular Christmas wish on the list was a "Dad". A request for a "mum" reached number 23 on the list.
GERMANY - The German government and opposition are pledging higher benefits for pensioners, families and the long-term unemployed ahead of elections next year, but Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble is secretly planning cutbacks to prepare for a weakening economy and possible fallout from the euro crisis.
USA - In America the decline of Christianity proceeds… the systematic purging of Christian teachings and symbols from our public schools and public square has produced a growing population — 20 percent of the nation, 30 percent of the young — who answer “none” when asked about their religious beliefs and affiliations.
EUROPE/RUSSIA - Freezing weather in eastern Europe has claimed at least 220 lives this month, most of them in the former USSR. Temperatures in Russia have been 10 to 15 degrees below average, with -50C (-58F) recorded in Siberia. At least 88 deaths have been reported - many of the victims were homeless. Ukraine reported 83 deaths on Friday and Poland 49, while heavy snow caused disruption in the Balkans. In Poland, most of the deaths were caused by carbon monoxide inhalation as a result of faulty heating.
UK - Heavy rain and floods are causing serious disruption across the country, as the whole of southern England is placed under a severe weather warning before Christmas. Roads and railways are suffering severe disruption after Britain was hit by yet more heavy rain, with more than a month's worth falling in the South West in the last five days. The area has been placed under an "amber" weather warning, with a serious risk of flooding on the already-saturated ground. The rest of southern England, along with the Midlands, southern Wales and parts of Scotland are also under a severe weather warning for heavy and persistent rain, according to the Met Office.
USA - First white Christmas in Oklahoma City since 1914 is predicted. Even Dallas, Texas, could see snowfall on Tuesday. Tornadoes could also strike the Gulf Coast tomorrow. More than 150 million Americans could see snow when they wake up on Christmas Day
GERMANY - Germany does not want to push Britain out of the European Union, but will not be “blackmailed” with the threat of an exit either, the country’s finance minister has warned.
UNITED NATIONS - Have you ever heard of Agenda 21? If not, don't feel bad, because most Americans haven't. It is essentially a blueprint for a "sustainable world" that was introduced at the UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992. Since then, it has been adopted by more than 200 countries and it has been modified and updated at other UN environmental summits.
UK - A senior Roman Catholic will today use his Christmas sermon to liken plans for the legalisation of gay marriage to the way the Nazis and Communists tried to undermine religion. The Bishop of Shrewsbury will launch a vociferous attack on the Coalition’s decision to fast track a vote on same-sex marriage in the New Year.
CHILE - Chile has raised the alert level for the Copahue volcano to red, the highest possible. The 3,000m (10,000ft) volcano is in Argentina's south-western Neuquen province, near the Chilean border. It began spewing ash and gas on Saturday morning. In Argentina, the authorities have told residents of local villages to monitor the situation. Many people have already left the area as a precaution.
