MIDDLE EAST - Sources close to the French Defense Ministry reported Friday, December 7, that a Western-Arab military intervention against the Assad regime will begin shortly with the participation of the US, France, Britain, Turkey, Jordan and other anti-Assad Arab nations, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar.
French and British warships have joined the USS Eisenhower carrier off Syria. The mission would combine an air blitz and special operations forces on the ground for wiping out Assad’s chemical arms stocks, air force and air defense batteries.
BERLIN, GERMANY - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Thursday afternoon following a meeting with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, that the two were not in agreement over a housing project being planned in an area on the outskirts of Jerusalem. "On the question of settlements, we are agreed that we are not agreed,” [Mrs] Merkel told a joint news conference with [Mr] Netanyahu in Berlin, according to AFP. [Mr] Netanyahu told reporters at the joint news conference that he has no doubt about Germany's commitment to Israeli security.
UK - Experts have warned the cost of bread and cake is set to rise after the wet spring reduced crop yields. The price of a loaf from bakers and supermarkets will increase by up to 10p, with the cost of cakes, pastries and savoury snacks also rising. Bakers are facing a £50-a-ton hike in the price of flour; the equivalent to 13 per cent of the cost of the raw material. That increase will have to be passed on to customers, the chairman of the National Association of Master Bakers (NAMB) has warned. JAPAN - A 7.3 magnitude quake has struck off Japan's eastern coast, triggering a tsunami warning and a one-metre wave that has hit Miyagi Prefecture. The wave hit the city of Ishinomaki, while the quake was also felt strongly in the capital, Tokyo. The epicentre of the quake was about 245km (150 miles) south-east of Kamiashi at a depth of about 36km, the US Geological Survey said. Buildings were reported to have swayed violently in Tokyo.

USA - Republican lawmakers took a firm stand on Wednesday against an Obama administration proposal that would make it easier for the president to increase the nation's debt limit, worried it would undercut their leverage to cut government spending. The idea that the president would give himself the ability "to raise the debt limit infinitely at any time he wants is the definition of insanity," said Arizona Republican Representative Trent Franks. Wyoming Republican Representative Cynthia Lummis called it "an unprecedented power grab," while Ohio Republican Representative Pat Tiberi said [Mr] Obama was in "la la land."
USA/SYRIA - The USS Eisenhower, an American aircraft carrier that holds eight fighter bomber squadrons and 8,000 men, arrived at the Syrian coast yesterday in the midst of a heavy storm, indicating US preparation for a potential ground intervention. While the Obama administration has not announced any sort of American-led military intervention in the war-torn country, the US is now ready to launch such action “within days” if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad decides to use chemical weapons against the opposition, the Times reports. Some have suggested that the Assad regime may use chemical weapons against the opposition fighters in the coming days or weeks.
USA - Boeing has successfully tested an electro-magnetic pulse (EMP) missile that turns “science fiction into science fact” and could be the doomsday weapon against Iran, but media have largely ignored the development.
JAPAN - The Japanese Navy has delivered surface-to-air missile systems in order to battle a perceived threat arising from the planned North Korean rocket launch, Kyodo news announced. Two Patriot Advanced Capability-3 batteries have arrived to the island of Ishigaki, some 400 kilometers southwest of Okinawa, on board the JDS Kunisaki. Patriots will also be deployed on Okinawa. Japan's armed forces have been placed on standby ahead of the planned North Korean missile launch. The military buildup around Japan follows Pyongyang's announcement of plans to launch its second long-range rocket this year after a failed attempt in April.
EGYPT - The Egyptian army has deployed tanks and armoured troop carriers outside the presidential palace in Cairo after clashes between supporters and opponents of President Mohammed Morsi. The streets of the capital are now reported to be calm following the earlier violence that left at least three people dead and hundreds injured. Egypt is seeing growing unrest over a controversial draft constitution. The government insists that a referendum will go ahead this month.
