ISRAEL - Israel imposed a general closure on the West Bank late Thursday night, while the army and police raised their level of alert ahead of Friday’s anticipated Land Day demonstrations and a so-called Global March to Jerusalem. The march’s organizers have predicted that two million participants will converge on Israel’s borders to join the protests.
EUROPE - The best hope for saving the euro is for the Pope to pray for divine intervention, according to an email written in the office of Herman Van Rompuy, the man charged with preserving the European Union's single currency.
UK - Queues have formed at petrol stations as demand for fuel shot up after ministers called for people to top up in case of a tanker drivers' strike. Some garages ran dry but retailers said they were coping and normal deliveries would ensure supplies were replenished.
USA - The number of children with autism in the United States continues to rise, according to a new report released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The latest data estimate that 1 in 88 American children has some form of autism spectrum disorder.
USA - Barack Obama actually plans to do it. He actually plans to neuter America by unilaterally dismantling most of the US strategic nuclear arsenal. In fact, Barack Obama says that the United States has a "moral obligation" to disarm as we lead the way to "a world without nuclear weapons".
MIDDLE EAST - America has dramatically stepped up its "secret war" in Yemen with the US ordering dozens of drone attacks on al-Qaida hotspots, which have also killed scores of civilians. With the backing of Yemen's fragile government, President Barack Obama has authorized a rapid increase in attacks since last May, with 26 incidents recorded.
BERLIN, GERMANY - German government advisors are pleading for using submarines in the war on piracy at the Horn of Africa. Thanks to their "highly modern sensor technology," German submarines are not only capable of "covertly observing the pirates' vessels" and following their course, but also of "observing the pirates' potential bases both day and night," according to a statement just published by the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP).
CUBA - Pope Benedict XVI has criticised the 50-year-old US trade embargo imposed on Cuba, as he ends a visit to the island. The Pope called for greater rights in Cuba, saying he wanted a society in which no-one was denied basic freedoms.
JAPAN - A recent examination at Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant has revealed radiation levels up to ten times the fatal dose. The news alarmed thousands of people who have been living in constant fear of radiation exposure for over a year.
USA/MIDDLE EAST - The US is sending an amphibious assault group and a couple of thousand US Marines to the Persian Gulf. With another US carrier making its way to Iran’s doorstep, US military still insist that this is a “regularly scheduled deployment”.
