Al Gore's climate group shrinking

USA - One of Al Gore's campaigns to save the planet has scaled back its field operations since climate legislation failed earlier this year in Congress. The Alliance for Climate Protection was operating in about 25 states at its peak, including Florida, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, Ohio and Pennsylvania. But the group now has field offices in just seven states.

What happened to the 'warmest year on record'?

UK - A year ago tomorrow, just before the opening of the UN Copenhagen world climate summit, the British Meteorological Office issued a confident prediction. The mean world temperature for 2010, it announced, 'is expected to be 14.58c, the warmest on record' - a deeply worrying 0.58c above the 1961-1990 average.

Angela Merkel resists eurozone bond and debt proposals

GERMANY - Germany looks likely to block moves that some eurozone partners and the International Monetary Fund argue could help resolve Europe's debt crisis. But Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel dismissed both proposals on Monday. Pressure is growing on the eurozone to raise the financial safety net for banks and to create a joint government bond to reduce borrowing costs.

Firewall needed as eurozone stands on brink of meltdown

EUROPE - Developments in euro debt markets remind me more and more of September 2008. Unless Europe's policymakers seize the initiative to secure the position of Spain and Italy, we could see a new seizure in bank funding markets which would force the euro area either to underpin monetary union with some mutual fiscal guarantees or to fragment.

China's credit bubble on borrowed time as inflation bites

CHINA - The Royal Bank of Scotland has advised clients to take out protection against the risk of a sovereign default by China as one of its top trade trades for 2011. This is a new twist. It warns that the Communist Party will have to puncture the credit bubble before inflation reaches levels that threaten social stability. This in turn may open a can of worms.

Euro Crisis Damages Germany's Reputation

GERMANY - Germany's position on how best to combat the euro crisis has made it increasingly unpopular in recent months. Now the Foreign Ministry is planning a PR offensive to repair the damage to Berlin's image.

Return to the Deutsche Mark?

GERMANY - Europe is discussing the horror scenario of a break-up of the euro zone. At present, that still seems unlikely, but experts are alarmed. A comeback of national currencies would be fatal - especially for Germany. The deutsche mark is still around. Even almost nine full years after the introduction of euro notes and coins, German households still have an estimated 13 billion deutsche marks - stashed in hiding places, in collections or under grandma's mattress.

Wave goodbye to Internet freedom

USA - The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is poised to add the Internet to its portfolio of regulated industries. The agency's chairman, Julius Genachowski, announced Wednesday that he circulated draft rules he says will "preserve the freedom and openness of the Internet." No statement could better reflect the gulf between the rhetoric and the reality of Obama administration policies.

Welsh Defence League links with neo-Nazis

UK - An undercover investigation by BBC Wales into a group campaigning against Muslim extremists has found links with neo-Nazi supporters. Secretly-filmed footage in Monday's Week In Week Out programme also exposes criminal activity among some Welsh Defence League (WDL) supporters.

The Failure of the International Financial System

USA - The price of commodities, particularly food and petroleum products, will be higher in the coming year, which will strain budgets more than ever for those who still have jobs. Unemployment will not get appreciably better and government debt will rise.

Europe's Zero Hour

GERMANY - Impressed by the pending national bankruptcies in Portugal and Spain, the German discussion about withdrawing from the European currency is becoming more accentuated. According to observers, the question of "how much is it worth to Germany to keep the Euro," has "become one of the most difficult evaluations that a German government has ever had to confront."
