100 US Anglican parishes convert to Roman Catholic Church

USA - About 100 traditionalist Anglican parishes across the United States have decided to convert en masse to the Roman Catholic Church, it emerged yesterday. They have voted to take up the offer made by Pope Benedict XVI in November that permits vicars and their entire congregations to defect to Rome while keeping many of their Anglican traditions, including married priests.

Update - Nigeria religious clashes

NIGERIA - Some 500 people were killed in the weekend's revenge attack after religious clashes near the Nigerian city of Jos, local officials say. Officials say three mainly Christian villages near Jos were attacked from nearby hills by people with machetes. There is a long history of local tension between Muslims and Christians.

Strong earthquake hits eastern Turkey

TURKEY - A strong earthquake has struck eastern Turkey, killing at least 51 people, officials have said. The 6.0 magnitude quake, centred on the village of Basyurt in Elazig province, struck at 0432 (0232 GMT). It has been followed by more than 30 aftershocks.

'Beast of a storm', record floods hit Australia

AUSTRALIA - Melbourne was bracing for more bad weather Sunday after a "beast of a storm" ripped through Australia's second largest city, bringing with it hailstones the size of tennis balls. The mini-cyclone which smashed into the regional capital with winds of up to 100 kilometres (62 miles) an hour was an event which had likely not been seen since early last century, Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Kevin Parkyn said.

Central Nigeria clashes lead to 'scores of deaths'

NIGERIA - Scores of people have been reported killed in suspected religious clashes near the central Nigerian city of Jos. Witnesses said corpses were piled up in the village of Dogo-Nahawa, a few kilometres (miles) south of Jos. Acting President Goodluck Jonathan has put security forces in central Nigeria on full alert.

Malaysian Catholics angered by Muslim Communion act

MAYASIA - The Roman Catholic Church in Malaysia has criticised the authorities for not pressing charges against two Muslim journalists who took Holy Communion.The two apparently put communion wafers in their mouths and then spat them out. The Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur, Murphy Pakiam, said the two men had desecrated the church, and the lack of charges appeared to legitimise their behaviour.

IRAN - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Saturday called the September 11 attacks on the United States a "big fabrication" that was used to justify the US war on terrorism, the official IRNA news agency reported. Ahmadinejad, who often rails against the West and Israel, made the comment in a meeting with Intelligence Ministry personnel.

Iceland rejects plan to repay Icesave debts

ICELAND - Voters in Iceland have overwhelmingly rejected proposals to pay the UK and the Netherlands in the wake of collapse of the Icesave bank. With a third of results counted, 93% of voters said "No" in a referendum. Iceland's prime minister says her government will remain in office and continue to seek a repayment deal.

Vatican Hit by Gay Sex Scandal

VATICAN - The Vatican is at the center of a gay sex scandal involving a young chorister who allegedly procured men, including at least one seminarian, for a lay member of one of Pope Benedict's inner circles. Angelo Balducci, a civil engineer and honorary Vatican usher, was quoted in police wiretaps allegedly negotiating with Thomas Chinedu Ehiem, a 29-year-old Vatican choir member, about the kind of men he wanted brought to him. Some of the wiretap transcripts were published Wednesday in the Italian daily La Repubblica.
