ISRAEL - The United States needs to understand that Israel is an independent country and "not another star on the US flag," National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said on Wednesday morning in response to US President Joe Biden's comments on judicial reform. On Tuesday night, the US president said that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not be invited to the White House in the near future, and urged him to drop the judicial reform plan. "Like many strong supporters of Israel, I am very concerned. I am concerned that they get this straight. They can not continue down this road. I have sort of made that clear," Biden said to reporters.
USA - The White House offered praise Wednesday for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s comments in response to concerns from US President Joe Biden regarding the judicial overhaul being advanced by the Israeli government. The remarks by White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby appeared to represent an attempt by the Biden administration to lower the temperature after tensions between the US and Israel flared up a day earlier.
INDIA - It offers a diplomatic forum and development financing, outside of the Western mainstream. The acronym began as a somewhat optimistic term to describe what were the world’s fastest-growing economies at the time. But now the BRICS nations — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — are setting themselves up as an alternative to existing international financial and political forums.
CHINA - The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Sunday cautioned the Philippines against strengthening military cooperation with the US, saying it will be used to serve Washington’s geopolitical agenda to the detriment of Manila’s own security. The latest warning from the Chinese embassy in Manila cited Philippines' President Ferdinand Marcos Jr’s decision last month to give US troops access to four additional military bases in the Southeast Asian country.
PHILIPPINES - Ferdinand Marcos Jr, the president of the Philippines, opened 2023 by making a visit to China. There, 14 bilateral agreements were signed between Manila and Beijing. Between the two, this sort of diplomacy is not unusual. They are close economic partners, with China being the Philippines’ largest export market and a critical source of inbound investment, especially as part of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
USA - The United States' commitment to support Ukraine against the Russian invasion appears to have rattled the stability of the domestic stockpile of missiles and munitions. The Biden administration has promised — as part of $33 billion sent in military aid for the besieged country so far — a US Patriot air-defense system will be sent to Ukraine, along with over 200,000 rounds of artillery, rockets, and tank rounds.
ISRAEL - Bending to a wave of mass protests, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delayed his contentious judicial overhaul plan Monday and said he wanted 'to avoid civil war' by making time to seek a compromise with political opponents. The announcement appeared to calm some of the tensions that have fueled three tumultuous months of unrest. But it failed to address the underlying issues that have polarized the nation, and the antigovernmental protest movement vowed to intensify its efforts.
USA - There’s very little doubt that warfare has changed dramatically in recent decades, with the tactical gap between leading militaries and those of local powers (or even the usually overlooked small countries) narrowing as the proliferation of unmanned systems continues unabated. With the advent of the information era, the abundance of war footage has essentially eliminated the once-assured readiness of tens of millions to go to war, leaving militaries around the globe struggling to meet their recruitment quotas. Losing even a hundred drones is certainly preferable to having ten soldiers (or even one) killed and/or wounded in action, particularly for politicians and their respective parties seeking reelection.
GERMANY - Hundreds of thousands of public transport workers walked off the job on Monday, bringing the country to a halt. Airports, bus stops, and train stations were at a standstill across Germany on Monday, as more than 400,000 public transportation employees took part in a 24-hour strike. The workers are demanding pay rises to compensate for inflation, which has soared in Germany since last year.
NORTHERN IRELAND - Ahead of the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, the new designation means an attack is “highly likely”. Britain’s security service MI5 has raised the terrorism threat level in Northern Ireland from “substantial” to “severe.” Thats according to the UK's Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris, who on Tuesday stated that after the shooting of a police officer last month “a small number of people remain determined to cause harm.”
SCOTLAND - Humza Yousaf was elected as Scotland’s new First Minister on Tuesday after a majority of lawmakers backed him to become the first ever racial minority and Muslim to lead the country. Yousaf will be sworn in Wednesday and takes over from Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s first female leader and the country’s longest-serving one yet.
USA - A trillion dollars is a lot of money. If you stacked a billion dollar bills on top of one another, the pile would be 67.9 miles high, but if you stacked a trillion dollar bills on top of one another the pile would be 67,866 miles high. And if you lined up a trillion dollar bills end to end, the line of dollar bills would be a staggering 96,906,656 miles long. That is longer than the distance from the Earth to the Sun. A trillion dollars is such a vast amount of money that it is truly difficult to comprehend, but as you will see below, that much money has already been pulled out of “vulnerable” US banks over the past year. Hordes of small and mid-size banks are now in trouble, and that is really bad news because those institutions issue most of the mortgages, auto loans and credit cards that our economy runs on.
ISRAEL - The Histadrut Labor Federation, Israel's primary worker's union, announced on Monday evening that the planned strikes and closures were canceled in light of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's announcement that he would temporarily pause judicial reform legislation.
ISRAEL - The country is facing an unprecedented combination of “external threats” with an “internal storm,” the IDF chief of staff says. The ongoing protests must remain in the public sphere and not affect the military, Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi said on Monday, as turmoil over planned judicial reform continues in the country.
EUROPE - Russia and China are shaping global politics while the US dominates its partners across the Atlantic, leaving European countries as mere passengers. The meeting of Russian president Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Moscow last week was met with predictable accusations in Western circles that Moscow was becoming “subservient” or even a “vassal” of Beijing.
