UK - Climate activists demanded an end to capitalism, “black liberation”, and the abolition of police at a demonstration outside the United Nations COP26 summit in Glasgow, Scotland. Gathering in George Square in central Glasgow on Saturday, an array of climate activists, including those from indigenous communities in South America, Asia, and Africa, came together to denounce Western imperialism and the alleged racism inherent in climate change.
VATICAN - The Vatican’s L’Osservatore Romano newspaper offered a fawning review Saturday of John Kerry’s address this week at the COP26 Climate Change Conference, warning of the risk of “climate negligence.” “It would be negligent to leave Glasgow and the COP26 international climate conference without establishing rules for verifying the commitment of individual states to resolve the emergency,” the paper states, citing Kerry.

USA - Los Angeles Archbishop José Gomez has denounced a deliberate effort “to erase the Christian roots of society and to suppress any remaining Christian influences.” In a powerful video address to the Congress on Catholics and Public Life in Madrid, Archbishop Gomez said Thursday that an “elite leadership class has risen in our countries that has little interest in religion and no real attachments to the nations they live in or to local traditions or cultures. This group, which is in charge in corporations, governments, universities, the media, and in the cultural and professional establishments, wants to establish what we might call a global civilization,” the archbishop warned.
USA - In 2007, a group of Stanford researchers decided to explore a novel question: What effect would a person’s choice of online avatars have on their behavior? Their findings were startling. Not only would the user operate the avatar in a way consistent with its appearance in the digital world, but the avatar’s characteristics would shape the user’s behavior back in the real one. A person who chooses to be taller digitally becomes a more aggressive negotiator in daily life. Someone who dons an inventor’s lab coat online is more creative at real-world meetings. Adopting a character digitally, the researchers found, can essentially change a personality, in a turn that has come to be known as the Proteus Effect.
USA - The Biden administration’s onerous vaccine mandate is forcing Americans to “choose between putting food on their tables or receiving a vaccine,” according to critics. Earlier today, the administration revealed that businesses with 100 employees or more that don’t enforce vaccine mandates before January 4th are at risk of being punished by a staggering $136,532 fine. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is also considering extending the rule to businesses with fewer than 100 employees, potentially impacting millions more companies.

UK - Jellyfish are continuing to clog the cooling intake pipes of a nuclear power plant in Scotland, which has previously prompted temporary shutdowns of the plant. The Torness nuclear power plant has reported concerns regarding jellyfish as far back as 2011, when it was forced to shut down for nearly a week — at an estimated cost of $1.5 million a day — because of the free-swimming marine animals. Like many other seaside power plants, the Torness plant uses seawater to prevent overheating. While there are measures in place to prevent aquatic life from entering the intake pipes, according to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, they are no match for the sheer number of jellyfish that come during so-called “jellyfish blooms.” “Usually, screens prevent aquatic life and similar debris from being drawn into the power plants’ cooling system,” the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists wrote in a 2015 blog post. “But when sufficiently large volumes of jellyfish or other aquatic life are pulled in, they block the screens, reducing the volume of water coming in and forcing the reactor to shut down.”
USA - In Wichita, Kansas, nearly half of the roughly 10,000 employees at aircraft companies Textron Inc and Spirit AeroSystems remain unvaccinated against COVID-19, risking their jobs in defiance of a federal mandate, according to a union official. "We're going to lose a lot of employees over this," said Cornell Adams, head of the local Machinists union district. Many workers did not object to the vaccines as such, he said, but were staunchly opposed to what they see as government meddling in personal health decisions. The union district has hired a Texas-based lawyer to assist employees and prepare potential lawsuits against the companies should requests for medical or religious exemptions to vaccination be denied. A life-long Democrat, Adams said he would no longer vote for the party. "They'll never get another vote from me and I'm telling the workers here the same thing." The clock is ticking for companies that want to continue gaining federal contracts under an executive order by Democratic President Joe Biden, which requires all contractor employees be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by December 8.

USA - In Dallas today, hundreds of these QAnon nuts gathered in Dealey Plaza to witness the triumphant return of John F Kennedy Jr, who you may recall is dead — he died in a plane crash in 1999, Jimmy Kimmel said on Tuesday's Kimmel Live. "But these people believe he didn't actually die, he's been working as a secret agent of Donald Trump to put him in power." You might "find this hard to believe," he deadpanned, but "he didn't show."
EUROPE - The EU is facing a crisis on four levels as France, Germany and Poland shift away from Brussels' rules, a top lawyer has warned. Steven Barrett, Commercial Chancery Barrister at Radcliffe Chambers, has identified four areas of concern for the bloc when it comes to upholding the rule of law. The rule of law is enshrined in Article two of the Treaty on European Union as a prerequisite for all member states in order to protect the fundamentals of the bloc. But in a series of posts on Twitter, Mr Barrett suggested the cornerstone of the EU is under threat.
