GERMANY - The US, Germany’s closest strategic ally, came surprisingly close to the ‘bogeyman’ Russia in the list of countries that the Germans fear the most, leaving North Korea and others lag behind, a new poll revealed. Incredibly, as many as 55 percent of Germans believe the US is almost an equal threat to their country as Russia, which scored 56 percent in the latest study by Forsa pollster, Bild reports. Other countries that usually dominate mainstream airwaves trail far behind. Germans have generally become less supportive of the US, as previous surveys show.
USA - It’s not just Congress that’s seeing more and more female faces as of late. Women have taken control of the US’ multibillion dollar military-industrial complex too. Who said that war is only a man’s business? Politico celebrated this “watershed” moment on Wednesday, announcing that as of January 1, the CEOs of four of the nation’s top five defense contractors – Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, and Boeing’s defense wing – are now women. The latest appointment was of Kathy Warden as CEO and president of Northrop Grumman. In government, the Pentagon’s top weapons buyer, the State Department’s weapons seller, the Department of Energy’s nuclear weapons chief, and the secretary of the Air Force are all women.
USA - Researchers in 2018 achieved a new kind of chimeric first, producing sheep-human hybrid embryos that could one day represent the future of organ donation – by using body parts grown inside unnatural, engineered animals. With that end goal in mind, scientists created the first interspecies sheep-human chimera in February, introducing human stem cells into sheep embryos, resulting in a hybrid creature that's more than 99 percent sheep – but also a tiny, little bit like you and me. Admittedly, the human portion of the embryos created in the experiment – before they were destroyed after 28 days – is exceedingly small, but the fact they existed at all is what generates considerable controversy in this field of research.
GERMANY - German eurosceptics could push for the country to quit the EU by 2024 unless the bloc is “completely changed” after the upcoming European Parliament elections. The new EU politicians would be nominated by “national parliaments proportional to the fractional strength”, which would also spell the end of European elections.
GERMANY - It is wrong that an incident is called “a ‘hate-fueled hunt’ only when it comes to crimes committed by some far-right extremists,” Rainer Wendt, the head of the German police union, told Bild daily as he called on the German government to take a clear stand on a recent incident. On December 29, several migrant youths attacked passers-by at random on the streets of the southern German town of Amberg. While police are still investigating the case and providing no details on the suspects’ motives, Wendt was apparently eager to share his own thoughts on the issue. “I will name you the motive: it is deep contempt for our state and for the people who live with us,” he told Bild.
GERMANY - Far-right vigilantes have been patrolling the streets of a German town after a series of violent attacks by a gang of migrants, the mayor has warned. Michael Cerny, mayor of Bavarian city Amberg, revealed groups from the far-right National Democratic Party (NPD) have taken to the streets after four migrants left 12 people aged 13 to 42 injured in a series of unprovoked assaults last weekend. But Mr Cerny, the mayor of Amberg, said he feared patrols by the NPD could escalate the situation. He told told local newspaper Mittelbayerischen Zeitung: “I can understand the uncertainty that I see in the reactions of some local people, but this hatred and the threats of violence coming from all over the country are going too far.”
UK - Since the 2016 referendum on membership of the European Union, Brits have been combing their family trees for traces of European ancestry that might grant them a new passport. In 2017, a record number — 7,493 — were granted German nationality, according to Germany's Federal Statistics Office. And with the future of Brexit Britain looking increasingly uncertain, the number of Brits applying for alternate passports is only likely to grow.
GERMANY - Sahra Wagenknecht, who set up Aufstehen (Get Up) in September, said the French demonstrations encouraged her to believe it was possible to effect change without being a political party. She cited growing inequality in Germany and frustration over the government’s failure to adequately tackle it as a powerful motivating force for a protest movement.
ITALY - Italian banks are following similar patterns that drove the eurozone financial crisis an economics correspondent has warned. European Central Bank supervisors were this week ordered to take charge of an Italian bank, Banca Carige. BBC’s economics correspondent Andrew Walker warned that some banks in Italy were at risk of following similar patterns which fueled the eurozone crisis five or six years ago. He said: “We have had news that a bank, Carige, has had administrators appointed by the European Central Bank. The first time it has done that.” The lender has lost 90 percent of its value as stocks in the Italian bank plunged on the Milan stock market.
NETHERLANDS - The Netherlands have exposed a growing division in the European Union after refusing to take in migrants who were rescued in the Mediterranean unless other member states are willing to do the same. The Netherlands became embroiled in a stand-off over the onboard conditions after initially refusing to accept the rescued migrants, which includes four women and seven children, four of whom are unaccompanied. Italy, Malta and Spain were also involved in the row after refusing to take in a number of those on board Sea-Watch 3. The European Commission, Brussels’ powerful executive, are working with EU countries in order to end the deadlock. So far Brussels has failed to develop a group-wide policy that enables the fair distribution of migrants across the bloc with EU countries relieving the burden on southern states.
USA - It is the most totalitarian form of blacklisting: not just to be prevented from speaking on a university campus, or to be kicked off social media, but to be shut out of the entire financial system. That is the terrifying new threat to freedom that western societies must now contend with.
EUROPE - EU moves to outlaw the word “mankind” because it starts with “man”. Liberal dogma now dictates that words beginning with the letters “m-a-n” are now “gender-biased” tools of the patriarchy which must be criminalized — at least in the European Union. The EU has decided to ban the use of “gender-biased” words and will be moving towards more gender neutral language. The outlawing of gender-specific language and more is all part of the new paradigm laid out in their new guide, Gender Neutral Language In The European Parliament.
USA - The beginning of a new year is supposed to be all about hope, right? And I would certainly like to tell you that 2019 is going to be America’s best year ever and that everybody is going to receive a double portion of blessing, prosperity and happiness, but that simply would not be true. Unfortunately, the truth is that the elements for a “perfect storm” are rapidly coming together and 2019 is going to be an exceedingly challenging year.
USA - While Washington is locked in tough trade talks with Beijing, China is also on the mind of the acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan who reportedly told civilian leaders at the Pentagon to focus on the country. Less than two days on the job, Shanahan – previously deputy defense secretary to James Mattis, who departed on Monday – told the leaders to remain “focused on ongoing operations” but “remember ‘China, China, China,’” an anonymous official told Reuters.
USA - US President Donald Trump has rejected criticism his approval ratings in foreign countries are low, pointing out that he was elected by the United States, and if he pursued policies that were popular in European capitals he’d be failing in his job as President. The comments came during Tuesday’s cabinet meeting at the White House, where the President sat with a stylised Game of Thrones-style poster highlighting his warning to Iran that “Sanctions are Coming”.
