The paper says the Metropolitan Police will deploy vans with roof-mounted cameras and facial-recognition technology - which can analyse thousands of people every minute and recognise, as the paper puts it, terror suspects, wanted criminals and known troublemakers.
USA - It’s been revealed by sources within the US Department of Justice that direct messages sent through Facebook by American users, along with public postings, have been rigorously monitored, and reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) if they express anti-government, anti-authority views, or if they question the legitimacy of the November 2020 presidential election’s outcome.
EUROPE - The increase in international crises, particularly since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and the continuing rhetoric of future Sino American confrontation in the Indo-Pacific, are resulting in a period of profound geopolitical upheaval, with rising maritime and naval challenges. Several trends are thus interlinked, between the strengthening of the transatlantic nexus, the continuous increase in the importance of the Indo-Pacific and the wish for strategic rebalancing on the part of the countries of the South.
USA - Yes, you read the headline correctly. Collectively, the three big banks that have collapsed in 2023 had more assets than all 25 banks that collapsed in 2008 did. Unfortunately, the banking collapse of 2023 is far from over. We still have eight more months to go before this year is done, and many more banks are currently teetering on the brink of disaster. Sudan's former prime minister Abdalla Hamdok has warned that the ongoing conflict in the country could deteriorate into full-blown civil war, citing wars in neighbouring Middle Eastern countries.
USA - The 'godfather' of artificial intelligence (AI) has tossed a grenade into the raging debate about the dangers of the technology — after sensationally quitting his job at Google and saying he regrets his life's work. British-Canadian pioneer Geoffrey Hinton, 75, further fanned the flames of a growing Silicon Valley civil war, as he issued a spine-chilling warning that 'scary' chatbots like the hugely popular ChatGPT could soon become smarter than humans.
USA - Sales of Bud Light beer are down by over a quarter, year on year, after the disastrous partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. The beer brand presented Mulvaney with personalized cans showing her face, which she promoted on April 1. Fans of the beer erupted in fury. A boycott was declared, Kid Rock used Bud Light cans as target practice, and $5 billion was wiped off the value of the brand. Two senior marketing executives have taken leave of absence amid the fiasco. On Sunday, Beer Business Daily reported that the beer's off-premise sales volume - meaning the amount of beer sold outside of restaurants and bars - had fallen by 26.1 percent from a year earlier in the week ended April 22.
WALES - Locals in Swansea have hastily organised a two-day festival in the city to counter a pair of appearances by controversial media figure Katie Hopkins. Wokefest will be staged along the High Street later this week in response to Hopkins' sold-out shows at nearby Cinema & Co. The festival will take place at venues such as The Tangled Parrot, Elysium, Hippo and Jam Jar on Wednesday and Thursday (May 3 and 4) this week. Its organisers said they were all for free speech but would not tolerate "hate speech" or those that deliberately spread misinformation.
USA - India, Brazil, South Africa AND Pakistan — and numerous other emerging economies — have rebuffed American attempts to enlist them in the fight against Russia amid the conflict in Ukraine, the Washington Post has reported, citing leaked Pentagon files. According to classified US intelligence documents, which investigators believe were released online by US Air National Guard serviceman Jack Teixeira, India has no intention of taking sides in the standoff over Ukraine, the paper reported on Saturday.
VATICAN - Pope Francis revealed yesterday that he was involved in a secret peace mission to try to end Russia's war in Ukraine as he vowed to do everything in his power to stop the conflict. 'I'm available to do anything. There is a mission that's not public that's under way; when it's public I'll talk about it,' the 86-year-old pontiff told reporters during a flight home after a three-day visit to Hungary. 'I think that peace is always made by opening channels. You can never achieve peace through closure. This is not easy.'

USA - Satanists gathered at the Satanic Temple in Boston, Massachusetts this weekend to celebrate the temple’s 10th anniversary. The Satanist convention promised to be “a weekend of blasphemy and remembrance in Boston,” according to the temple’s website. “This event is dedicated to Boston mayor Michelle Wu for her unconstitutional efforts to keep TST out of Boston’s public spaces,” the Satanic Temple said.
USA - Robert F Kennedy Jr was recently interviewed by Piers Morgan and in the interview, he had a lot of interesting things to say about his father the late Robert F Kennedy, and his uncle President John F Kennedy. The topic of his uncle and father got brought up when Morgan asked Kennedy what impact did it have on him to lose both his uncle and father at such a young age. Kennedy responded “I think it had impact on the world. I think my father and uncle were fighting against the emergence of the military industrial complex.”
UK - Scientists have called for zealots to stop pushing vegetarian and vegan diets on to people, warning that meat is crucial for a healthy lifestyle. Almost 1,000 academics from leading universities across the world have signed an initiative which argues that livestock farming is too important to 'become the victim of zealotry'. Publishing in the academic journal Animal Frontiers, as part of a collaboration between professional animal science societies, dozens of experts looked behind new claims that eating meat causes diseases, as well as being harmful for the planet.
